I remember seeing them perform this live on my campus.. My jaw dropped within 10 seconds.
[Man and woman switch places]
Man: “The first- “ [gets interrupted by the woman and immediately stops talking as if he has lost his voice]
Woman: [man looks confused at the woman, then starts mouthing what she says] “-day I realized I was black: It was 2000. We had just learned about blacks for the first time in second grade. At recess, all the white kids chased me into the wood, chanting “slave”. My mother said I refused to come out for three hours, said she thinks I was lost in the trees, but I just needed to be closer to my roots-“ [both] ”As a-“ [woman stops talking like the man did before]
Man: [woman looks confused at the man, touching her throat, then starts mouthing what the man says] “-woman having a boyfriend is a battle! If seventy percent of us are abused in our lifetime, what is the number of men doing it? The answer is, not one man running faster than light is gonna complete a mission in depth. It’s what leaves me sick!”
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “The second day I realized I was black was in a gas station. I only had twenty-five cents so I searched for dispended on. The cashier floated from aisle to aisle, eyes fixed on my hands.”
Both: “That was the first time I realized skin color was a crime.”
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “My body has become cause to write legislation, cause for ass smacks in the back of the class. My body has admitted everything except respect. I’ve an ass! What makes you feel unsafe in our struggle not to yell?” [both] “Everything-“
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “The third day I realized I was black was in an all-white cafeteria. I gathered my legs under me, made rockets on my feet and approached a girl. She told me, she was not into my type of guy. I felt the words. She dabbers into my melanin. I have never wanted to disappear so bad.”
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “As a woman I’ve learned to answer to everything except my name. “Little lady“ is not said to me equal, but to make sure I remember my place. I battle [applause from the audience while he continues to speak] between wanting to own my body and accepting there is a one in four chance a man will acclaim to my skin. A plot of lane for the taking-“
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “The last day I realized I was black was in an elevator in California. To the white woman, that told me she knows what it feels like to be black, because she grew up poor: [both] I would tell you to think before you speak, [woman only again] but your mind has got to be bacteria infected and any filters through that labored them, nothing there is might be worse than no thought at all.”
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “There is a group of women going around the room, sharing their personal definition of feminism. He is the only man in the room and all of a sudden the tone switches to destroying the patriarch archly violating all men.”
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “Do you know what it feels like to be black? To pop lock your way in and out of hugs? It is not a problem you want to sympathize, [both] but to tell me you know my pain [woman only again] is to stab yourself in your leg, because you saw me get shot. We have two different wounds and looking at yours does nothing to heal mine.” [audience cheers]
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “Never will I turn away an ally.”
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “But when a man speaks on my behalf that only proofs my point.”
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “Movements are driven by passion, not by asserting yourself dominant by a role that already put you there.”
Both: “You speak to know pain, you only fathom because we told you it was there! You know nothing of silence until someone who can not know your pain, tells you how to fix it! Every day is a cruse of fiction, where there is no regards for lions cross!”
Woman: [man mouthing what she says] “I fight so my voice can be heard.” [man and woman switch places back] “I fight the voices you silence all in the name of what is right. [both] The problem is-“
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “-you assume this struggle is a test to social class. I am black and bold and beautiful by nature. [audience cheers] Ain’t no income that can change that!”
Woman: : [man mouthing what she says] “The problem with speaking up for each other-“
Man: [woman mouthing what he says] “-is that everyone is left-“
Both: “-without a voice.”
[audience cheering loudly]
[Captioners note] I couldn’t understand completely what they were saying at the follwing parts:
“not one man running faster than light is gonna complete a mission in depth“
“A plot of lane for the taking“
“any filters through that labored them, nothing there is might be worse than no thought at all”
“the patriarch archly violating“And I’m also not a native speaker so please feel free to send me the correct lines so I can edit them, thanks!
(Also sorry if the way I wrote this down is too complicated and not really helpful, I tried to do it like captioned-vines does it on their blog, but I might have messed up a little bit since this is my first time captioning anything)
